In 2019 the UN Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises visited Honduras to assess the State’s compliance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The Working Group made a number of criticisms regarding the regulation of corporate activity and human rights impacts, particularly around adequate procedures for Environmental Impact Assessments, licencing, transparency, accountability and misuse of the criminal justice system. The experts also called for the respect for the activities of human rights defenders and for regulation on consultation processes to ensure the effective participation of communities affected by mining projects (WG-business 2020).
