2004-2005 Blockade of company trucks traveling to San Marcos

In December 2004, members of indigenous communities began a 42-day blockade of Glamis Gold/Montadora Exploradora trucks passing through their communities on the way to San Marcos. On 11 January 2005, more than 1,200 soldiers and 400 police agents were deployed to break up the blockade, reportedly firing at unarmed protesters. This resulted in the death of Raul Casto Bocel, a Maya-Kaqchiquel farmer. This produced an immediate effect among local communities, who began to coordinate and organize the social mobilization against the Marlin mine affecting their territories.
