2007 Demonstrations demanding legislative ban on open pit metallic mining

On 17 July 2007, several major desmonstrations took place, including six roadblocks, in protest at proposed amendments to the 1998 Mining Law. Demonstrators called for the new legislation to "ban open pit and metallic mining, revoke mining permits from companies who are contaminating the natural environment and cancel concessions in national parks and reserves."
