2017 Archbishop leads march to Legislative Assembly demanding approval of Ban on Metallic Mining

On 9 March 2017, the Archbishop of San Salvador, José Luis Escobar Alas, led a 2,000 person march to the Legislative Assembly, demanding approval of the proposed law prohibiting metallic mining in El Salvador. According to field research conducted as part of The Legal Cultures of the Subsoil project, this rally constituted a turning point in the attitude of members of the Legislative Assembly toward the proposed legislative ban on metallic mining. The rally was received at the Legislative Assembly by members of the Legislature to whom the organizers of the march delivered more than 30,000 signatures collected in an eight-day campaign (Montoya, 2021).
