2014 Permanent People’s Tribunal Hearing

In June 2014, the Permanent People’s Tribunal held a hearing in Geneva to hear evidence provided by human rights defenders on eight extractive project cases, including El Dorado. The popular tribunal judges heard evidence of the potential impact of the mine on access to water sources and contamination as well as the consequences for agriculture and health. They were also told of Pacific Rim Corporation’s rejection of these allegations and the damages claim filed against the Government of El Salvador for refusing to allow the project to continue. The PPT hearing concluded with a general declaration calling for an international treaty to regulate transnational corporations and for companies to be held to account for violations of human rights, labour and environmental laws.
