2015 Protest of World-Bank Sponsored Conference in Tegucigalpa
In early 2015, the Honduran National Coalition of Environmental Networks and Organizations (CONROA) held a protest at a World Bank-sponsored conference in Tegucigalpa, called "Conference on Sustainable Development of Natural Resources". The group "urged the Bank – and the Honduran government – to support coffee farmers instead of national and transnational mining companies, stating that farming creates more jobs, income and better distribution of wealth without the long-lasting environmental impacts, public health problems and social conflict that mining generates." The protestors were from various communities in Honduras, including residents of Siria Valley who shared their experiences of the impacts of mining.
