2018 CMDBCP hold 10-day protest outside Tocoa Town Hall
Inversiones Los Pinares began construction of an access road to the ASP sites in April 2018 through the community of La Ceibita on the opposite side of River Guapinol. In the following months, the community of Guapinol detected large amounts of sediment and mud in the river preventing domestic consumption. The municipal authorities refused to acknowledge their complaints or respond to the CMDBCP demands for a cabildo abierto (consultative assembly) to consult on declaring the municipality free of mining. In protest, the CMDBCP and supporters held a protest outside the Tocoa town hall between 4 and 14 of June 2018 demanding a consultative assembly to declare the municipality free of mining. See Legal Action entitled "2007- Municipalities Declare Territories Free of Mining [ASP1 and ASP2]" for more information on municipal consultative assemblies and the "Mining-Free Territories" declarations.
